The Assistant

One of the great unsung heroes of rock history is Corinne “Coco” Schwab. Coco has been David Bowie’s personal assistant since 1973, after answering an ad in the Evening Standard in London looking for a “Girl Friday”. She is still his assistant and great friend, having seen him through every phase of his adult life. I have made paintings of every photo I could find of the elusive Coco, along with paintings of the other great secretaries and assistants of pop culture, and also cast myself in two supporting roles familiar to sci-fi fans.

I’ve been an assistant in one way or another for my whole working life. When weekday drudgery gets me down, I think about my heroes, these real and fictional giants of administrative history.
